for Food First NL’s Community Food Security Fund

Food First NL has launched a Community Food Security Fund to help improve access to food for 3 remote regions of the province. The fund has over $20,000 available for community groups in the Coast of Bays, Northern Peninsula, and the South Coast of Labrador who are looking to improve food security in their region.

The deadline to apply is June 17th, 2019.

Food Security exists when all people at all times have physical and economic access to adequate amounts of nutritious, safe, and culturally appropriate food to maintain an active and healthy life. To learn more about food security, visit www.foodfirstnl.ca.

Sample food security activities that you could apply for:

  • Community events (e.g. host a workshop, film screening, edible hike and boil-up)

  • Regional gatherings (e.g. host a conversation and plan activities or strategies)

  • Start or improve a food program (e.g. community garden, bulk buying club)

  • Professional development (e.g. educational training and tools for staff/volunteers)

  • Educational resource development and distribution (e.g. kits, booklets)

  • Equipment and supplies (e.g. to support cooking, gardening, bottling, fishingand/or hunting activities in programs)

  • Public or stakeholder engagement (e.g. a campaign, assessment, promotion)

These are just examples. We encourage you to think creatively!

  • Increasing access to healthy food

  • Sharing food skills and knowledge

  • Building awareness about food security issues

  • Creating a stronger food system

  • Engaging your community in food security discussion and planning

Groups can apply for 1 of 2 lines of funding in 2019:

Seed Grant: Up to $250 for smaller-scale or shorter-term activities

Root Grant: Up to $2,000 for larger-scale or longer-term activities. In addition to the application form, Root Grant applicants must submit: 1) a draft budget, and 2) a letter of support from a partner organization.

Funds will be distributed to successful applicants in July, 2019. Funds must be spent by December 31st, 2019.
