Food Skills Video Development

SCOFF: Seniors’ Celebration of Food & Film

Proposals are due on Monday, May 1st 2017. The selected applicant will be notified by Friday, May 12th 2017.

Food First NL is seeking to contract a videographer to record and edit a series of eight (8) 3-5 minute videos of seniors demonstrating traditional food skills from eight communities in Newfoundland & Labrador (NL).

Food security is a complex issue in NL. The province relies heavily on outside food sources. Numerous communities lack full grocery stores, leaving residents dependent on either local convenience stores or transportation to the closest grocery store to buy food. Many households struggle to afford enough healthy food and depend on food banks or family and friends where emergency food programming is absent.

With so many obstacles to accessing enough healthy food, it is not surprising that the province has the lowest rate of consumption of vegetables and fruit in Canada, as well as high rates of diabetes and other diet-related health issues.

That said, the province has rich food traditions of eating from the land and sea, including gardening, fishing, and berry picking. These traditional food ways, which are still practiced across the province today, represent a great strength upon which we can build to improve food security in NL.

This project aims to begin to capture some of this traditional food knowledge, which is present among seniors across NL, through recording engaging 3-5 minute videos of 8 different seniors sharing their food knowledge and skills.

The videos will be promoted across the province to a wide range of audiences. The videos will be screened by community organizations across NL, and will be promoted and shared through Food First NL, including its website, newsletter, Facebook, and Twitter.

The successful candidate will generate the following deliverables:

  • Film food skills videos with 8 seniors from 8 different communities across Newfoundland and Labrador (Communities TBA)
  • Edit each of the 8 food skills videos into 3-5 minute videos
  • Edit all interviews together into one 24-40 minute video

This contract will include travel to up to 8 communities outside of St. John’s to record the films. All travel expenses associated with this contract will be covered by Food First NL. Travel will be completed with the Education Manager. In your proposal, identify how many people would need to travel to complete the recording.

The video series must be completed (content filmed, edited, and delivered & DVDs printed and pressed) by August 2017. In your proposal, please indicate when you would be available to travel to complete the recordings. Candidates will need to be flexible to accommodate character availability.

Bids should not exceed $10,000 (including taxes).

Proposals will be assessed on the following criteria:

Submissions should include a CV outlining relevant experience and expertise, a clear outline of time lines, proposed contractors, budget breakdown, and acceptance of the conditions identified in this document.

Proposal should be sent to the attention of:
