Baker Lake became engaged in Food First NL’s Our Food NL project as a result of efforts to share knowledge with other jurisdictions, and via a partnership with the Nunavut Food Security Coalition.

The term food insecurity is used to describe the struggle to afford food. Food insecurity affects over four-million people in Canada, including 1.15 million children. In Newfoundland and Labrador, we have the highest food insecurity rate of all Canadian provinces, with at least 15.9% of households struggling to put food on the table.
Cold Plate Challenge: Make it Healthy, Keep it Cold
Food First NL is challenging YOU to make cold plates delicious and nutritious! This November and December, host an event (big or small - up to you!) where you serve your rendition of a healthy cold plate. Try new recipes that include a variety of veggies, fruits, whole grains, and legumes, and serve water instead of sugary drinks. The new Canada’s Food Guide is a great place to start when looking for cold plate inspiration!

After 10 years as Executive Director, Kristie will be leaving the role at the end of August to pursue a Master of Public Policy from the University of Oxford. This is an exciting time of change for both Food First NL and Kristie. We are now recruiting the next leader for the organization to steward it into its next chapter.

The Everybody Eats Action Group on Community Food Self-Sufficiency is striving to improve our access to locally produced and wild foods, as well as promoting the skills required to avail of them.

9 New Programs Chosen in the Coast Bays to Boost Community Food Self-Sufficiency & Security
Many months of fun, hard work have culminated in the creation of 9 new programs in 3 communities in the Coast of Bays that will improve residents' access to healthy, affordable food — from pig & chicken rearing, to community freezers full of donated game, fish, and berries, to community farms that include a plot for the local school, and more, like the heritage rhubarb garden pictured above, that's already produced tasty treats for the whole town.
