Food First NL is hiring a part-time Communications Assistant focused on marketing for Food First NL’s three social enterprises. Candidates can be based in either the St. John’s metro area or in Corner Brook. Information about the social enterprises can be found here:

The Job
The Communications Assistant will be responsible for the following:
Leading the creation, implementation, and evaluation of marketing plans for Food First NL’s social enterprises
Developing and collaborating on marketing content and improved communications for Food First NL’s social enterprises.
Collaborating with the Communications team to make improvements to Food First NL’s social enterprise websites, email newsletters, promotional materials, and social media platforms.
Assisting with Food First NL’s social enterprise outreach activities to strengthen relationships with customers, vendors, media, the public, and community partners. This may include attending events, hosting display booths, or other promotional activities as needed.
Participate in professional development training (e.g. plain language, social media platforms)
Participate as a member of the Food First NL team and contribute to communications, equity, evaluation, human resources, planning, and reporting activities of the organization.
Act as a representative of Food First NL at meetings, on committees, at events, and potentially with the media.

We’re looking for someone who has marketing communications experience with:
Developing marketing strategies with realistic and achievable goals within limited budgets
Managing the implementation and evaluation of these strategies
Writing creative copy for marketing campaigns
Creating and collaborating on video material development
Providing feedback on collaborative design materials to ensure alignment with marketing campaign goals
Managing multiple brand identities and reaching a range of audiences
Managing integration between Meta, Google, and our sales and advertising platforms
Writing for various audiences in an accessible way, with emphasis on using plain language
Some or all of these tools: Meta Business Suite, Google Analytics, Squarespace, MailChimp, SEO, Facebook, BlueSky, YouTube, Instagram, and Canva
Public outreach and networking
Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Gmail, Photos, Slides, Calendar, Drive)
You are excited about advancing Food First NL’s vision of “a province where everyone can eat with joy and dignity”
You have a foundation of knowledge about social enterprises and non-profits and may have some experience working with them
You are reliable and punctual
You are a creative problem solver who strives to remain open-minded and level-headed
You are organized, detail-oriented, and plan ahead in order to meet deadlines
You have strong communication skills and you enjoy working as part of a highly collaborative team
You are a good listener who can take direction and then work independently as part of a collaborative remote communications team
You are committed to equity and inclusion, take a trauma-informed approach, and you have experience interacting positively with groups who have been marginalized
You are able to work both in-person and online as required
Compensation and Other Details
Wage: $25.40 (Eastern rate- St. John’s metro area) or $24.40 (Western rate- Corner Brook area). Food First NL provides a living wage based on annual regional living wage data and the rate of pay will be determined by the residence location of the successful applicant. A cost of living increase is applied annually in February.
Position Type: Part-time. Food First NL’s contracts follow a fiscal year of April-March. Initial contract to March 31, 2026 with extension likely.
Hours: 20 hours/week, primarily Monday-Friday daytimes, with some flexibility. It will vary based on activities, with occasional evenings and weekends required.
Expected Start: November 2025
Leave:
4% vacation pay provided and unpaid vacation days available by request
15 public holidays annually, plus 3 days closure between Christmas and New Years
12 community service and food provisioning days
Ample sick and personal leave time available as needed
Benefits: Health and dental benefits available after 3 months
Working Environment & Travel: The position requires the candidate to reside in either St. John’s metro area or in the Corner Brook area.
Compensation will not be provided for candidates to relocate to the area for the position or for commuting to work.
This is a hybrid position and working from home will be possible as programming requirements allow. Doing so will require a reliable home internet connection and a monthly stipend can be provided to assist with internet costs
