It's finally here! After months of anticipation the 3rd Annual Folklife Festival is underway Aug. 13- 21! With agri-cultural events happening across St. John's and in Cupids, there's something for every food lover. Check out the calendar below and full details at www.seedstosupper.ca.

The St. John’s Farmer’s Market Saturday August 13th, 2011 9am-2pm Location: Lion’s Club Chalet, Bonaventure Ave., St. John’s A wide variety of vendors will participate at this years market, including farmers with early produce, international foods, arts and crafts, fresh coffee, photography, waffles, sweet snacks, kids events, buskers, and special events!

 

FEASt Workshop – Making Food Fun Saturday August 13th, 2011 11am- 12pm Location: St John’s Farmer’s Market- Lion’s Club Chalet, Bonaventure Ave., St. John’s Website: http://www.feastnl.ca/ Another exciting installment in FEASt's series of workshops at the St. John’s Farmer’s Market. Edible Wild Plants: A powerpoint presentation Saturday August 13th, 2011 2pm- 3pm Cost: Free Location: MUN Botanical Garden Mount Scio Road. Todd Boland, the Botanical Garden’s Research Horticulturist will point out many culinary treasures hidden in our forest, fields and roadsides. Find out about the many uses of cattails and why the best way to get rid of some weeds is to eat them. This program will take place indoors. Pre-registration is not required.

Location: Mun Botanical Gardens Mount Scio Road. Website: www.mun.ca/botgarden Contact Name: Anne Madden Contact Email: bgprograms@mun.ca Join Botanical Garden education staff for our special Seeds to Supper Family Programs. Make flowerpots from recycled materials, visit our vegetable garden, see how worms eat our garbage and make our soil, plant some edible seeds and feed the ducks. Pre-registration is not required.

Join Diane Pelley, Visitor Services Supervisor, for an edible plant hike that will go over the common and the not-so-common edible plants of our boreal forest, fen and barrens. Pre-registration is not required.

 

Food, Folklore, & Tourism Monday August 15th, 2011 1pm- 4:30pm Cost: Free, Registration Required Location: Cupids Legacy Centre, Cupids, NL Website: N/A Contact Name: Mel Contact Email: ichprograms@gmail.com This event will feature an open panel discussion session about culinary tourism in NL, including special guests Marilyn Coles-Hayley from the Bonavista Institute for Cultural Tourism and Ella Heneghan the Cultural Tourism Development Officer for the Dept. of Tourism Culture and Recreation. The second half of this event will be a working group session on the topic of challenges faced by tourism operators when developing culinary tourism products.

Eastern Edge Gallery Art Marathon: Art Garden Wednesday August 17th & Thursday August 18th, 2011 11am- 1pm Cost: Free Location: Eastern Edge Gallery, Harbourside Dr. St. Johns. Website: http://artmarathon.wordpress.com/ Contact Name: Michelle Contact Email: easternedgegallery@gmail.com As part of the Art Marathon Festival this year, Eastern Edge is holding workshops to create a Moveable Art Garden, which will be part of FEASt’s Third Annual Open Garden Day on Sunday August 21. The workshops will be held on each day, and will involve painting and planting the moveable garden boxes. This is a free family event, and there will be a community BBQ held at Eastern Edge each day.

Three Cheers for Composting! Saturday August 20th, 2011 10:30am- 11:30am Cost: Free Location: Mun Botanical Gardens Mount Scio Road. Website: www.mun.ca/botgarden Contact Name: Anne Madden Contact Email: bgprograms@mun.ca Growing healthy plants, including our food, starts with healthy soil. At MUN Botanical Garden we make our own – with fabulous results. All organic material (anything produced by a living organism) is recycled through a combination of natural biological and chemical processes. When we compost, we utilize natural processes. This presentation will introduce the practical steps of starting composting, indoors and out. The indoor presentation will be followed by a short walk in the garden to view some compost bins.
