Understanding Soil & Building Great Garden Soil

Welcome in 2015, the "International Year of Soils" with two educational teleconferences created by Food Security Network of NL (FSN) and presented by Sarah Crocker, FSN Public Outreach Coordinator and farm manager at Seed to Spoon, a small ecological farm in Portugal Cove, NL. FSN Educational Teleconferences are free to attend.

Soil part 1: Understanding Soil January 22nd, 2015, 6:30pm (Labrador) 7pm (Newfoundland) Take a close look at the properties and functions of soil in our ecosystem - Soil is so much more than dirt! We will discuss the physical elements and the natural and climatic processes occurring in soils. Learn the basics of balanced and nutrient rich soils for gardening.

Soil part 2: Building Great Garden Soil January 29th, 2015, 6:30pm (Labrador) 7pm (Newfoundland) (Please note the date change, it was incorrectly listed as the 28th before) Learn how to build and tend soils to support healthy abundant plant growth, with compost, mulching, and cover crop techniques. We'll compare the soil needs for growing in the ground, in raised beds, and in container gardens, using local examples and resources.
